The Watchmaker is the latest offering from Got Game Entertainment, and while it has a great deal of potential, it only lives up to part of it. You play two characters: Victoria Conroy (lawyer) and Darrel Boone (paranormal expert), who meet at 3:00 in a London law office, where you are briefed on the mission. Apparently an item of potentially dangerous power, a pendulum, has been stolen, and the castle you are about to go to is one of the suspected hiding places. Of course, your mission is to find out what you can, and hopefully recover the pendulum. The … Continue reading Watchmaker's Clockwork Mystery→
As its name suggests, Dinotopia is a dinosaur romp. In my opinion, there are too many dinosaur games and not enough of them are any good. Before your heart swells with expectation, Dinotopia is by no means the saviour of the dinosaur theme. Nor will it lead to the hasty demise of the dinosaur genre, and I can’t quite decide if this is a good or a bad thing. Dinotopia is teamed-up with what has been heralded as an exciting, new fantasy series of the same name, showing on the Hallmark channel. The fact that there is such a thing … Continue reading Dinotopia is No Utopia→
A long time ago Steven King produced a movie based on one of his short stories called Maximum Overdrive. Having read the story, I was pretty excited when the movie came out. But what really got me going was that King himself did television commercials to support the project. "I’m going to scare the hell out of you!" King would say. So I went into the theatre expecting a fright. Unfortunately Maximum Overdrive was so bad it was almost comical, and nothing at all like the book. So while some people say beware of Greeks baring gifts like giant wooden … Continue reading Fatal Frame is Fear Squared→
I started playing Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat on a PS2 and switched over to my Xbox just as soon as I could lay my hands on my own copy of this fantastic 3D adventure game. Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat is a cross between a really good seafaring game and a really great third-person adventure game. And the best part for me was that the controls were almost exactly the same in both modes and over both platforms, so I could switch back and forth. You play as Katarina de Leon, or Kat, the daughter of an … Continue reading Pirates Rule the High Seas→
I am an absolute nut when it comes to Diablo 2 and anything to do with samurai. So as you can imagine, the moment I found out about a Diablo-like game coming out based on a Japanese myth, I had to have it. And as with pretty much everything put out by Sierra, I was not disappointed. Throne of Darkness is not based on a real story, but follows a story line created by Click Entertainment. However it encompasses many of the details of larger then life hero’s as well as the danger and supernatural suspense that I have come … Continue reading Throne of Darkness Rules→
Every now and then I come across a game and wonder "what the hell were they thinking?" Frank Herbert’s Dune is one of those games. Every aspect of the game was either rushed or just not given the TLC it needed. Whatever the reasons, this is one of the most lackluster games I’ve ever played. Not since Take 2’s 1994 abysmal "Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller" and the 1996 bomb "Battlecruiser 3000AD" have I felt this strongly. The first obvious sign this product was rushed is the fact that the box, manual and Dreamcatcher’s website clearly state the game requirements must … Continue reading Frank Herbert’s Dune Misses Big Time→
I HATE FINAL FANTASY! I HATE FINAL FANTASY! I (expletive deleted) HATE FINAL FANTASY!!!!!!!! Ever since dealing with Sephiroth and his repeated 10-minute long Super Nova attacks, I swore off anything related to the Final Fantasy series. As if seeing commercial spots showing poorly animated FMV wasn’t enough, the crappy characters used in following episodes made me sick to my stomach. Do we really need another Leonardo Di-Crap-rio imposer, or another big headed freak that doesn’t do anything but point? Don’t even get me started on that Orko lookalike. I don’t care if his name is Vivi or whatever, to … Continue reading Final Fantasy X Gets It Together→
Zork: Grand Inquisitor (ZGI) is a delightful departure from the standard gloom and doom play of most modern video games. Even better, it makes fun of some of them. It also pokes fun at Star Wars, Indiana Smith and a host of other pop culture symbols. I don’t recall the original Zork being that funny. Maybe it was and I just have a poor memory, but ZGI is hysterical to the point that parts of the game made me laugh out loud, which is pretty impressive. What is particularly great about ZGI though, is not just that it’s funny, there … Continue reading Zork: Grand Inquisitor, Grand Game→

Game Review- Jagged Alliance 2: Unfinished Business
I have been waiting a long time to get back into the action of the Jagged Alliance world. I’ve been following this series since the beginning, having been attracted to the arsenal of real-world weapons and interesting character personalities. And some of these mercs have been on my team a long time, like when we liberated Metavira back in 1995. After solving the first Jagged Alliance, I was delighted to play the first sequel called Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games. This was basically a series of single player missions connected in only the loosest sense of the word. However, it added … Continue reading JA2:UB Zeroes In On a Kill→
