Hargosh Has Left The Building

The final day of my journey across E3 is definitely for the better. To start off, I was able to get in touch with Activision, and had the opportunity to try out their latest Quake shooter: Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Taking a cue from EA's well known Battlefield series, Quake Wars improves on the GDF (Marine)/Strogg confrontation from Quake 2 and 4 and turns it into a team based squadron killfest. It took me a while to get accustomed to the game, as I admit I'm not the best in Battlefield type games, but it looks like it will be a big hit. Activision also announced that a game based on the latest X-Men movie will be out in time for the film's release. It will show the events between the second and third films, and in particular, what happened to Nightcrawler.

Tony Hawk had two titles in the works. Downhill Jam is slated for the Nintendo DS, and the currently titled Project 8 is in the works for 360 and PS3. In addition, Activision made a huge announcement with the purchase of RedOctane, thus adding the impressive Guitar Hero series into their lineup.

My biggest meeting of the day was with Microsoft. In particular, they were premiering an enhancement to Xbox Live, called Anywhere. Now Xbox Live is not only available to Classic and 360 owners, but can also be accessed via PCs and Windows Mobile based cell phones and PDAs. That way, if you want to know if anyone is playing on Live, just check on your PC or Mobile device and he should be visible. Even better, now with Live Anywhere, if a game is purchased on your 360, the same game can be made available for PC or Mobile at no additional cost.

After my meeting was finished, I decided to spend a few hours around the Microsoft booth and get hands on with some key products. Both Lost Planet and Too Human were amazing to look at, but I was only able to play Too Human, which is a blast. The best way to describe it is as Smash TV mixed with a touch of Ninja Gaiden. Despite looking very early, the game has some great potential. Sadly I was not able to get a chance to see the game I really wanted to play: Gears of War.

I also got to spend some time playing more Live Arcade titles. I knew that Uno was now available because my girlfriend told me it would come out, but I didn't know that it would be compatible with the Live Camera. I tested the Live camera, and was amazed at how smooth the video was. I couldn't believe this was coming from a simple Webcam. But what shocked me was one specific Live Arcade title that I noticed…LUMINES LIVE! I enjoyed playing Lumines ad nauseam on my PSP, and to play it on 360 is just a shock. A bigger shock though was how the game actually had FMV music videos in the background a la DDR Extreme.

I then got a little bit more into NCAA 07 on the 360. I played a bit of it at the EA booth on Day 1 but the game froze up during the 1st quarter. This time, however, I got to play a full game, and the transition to 360 looks amazing. I have always enjoyed the NCAA football series on Xbox and am looking forward to making the jump. July is way too far away.

But the last thing I got to see was just on impulse. There was a very short line to see Scarface: The World is Yours. Naturally I took the chance to see it, and it was in good time because about 5 minutes later, the line was filled up again. The in game footage is hilarious. As if the movie wasn't over the top already, the gameplay goes even further. The first mission actually takes place during the big shootout at the end of the movie, except Tony locates and guns down Sosa's assassin and escapes with a henchman. Eventually we get to missions of Tony trying to rebuild his empire up to the point where he can get enough money, power, and women to take on Sosa once and for all. Nothing succeeds like excess, and the game screams out excess. I can only imagine that this game will win an award for most F-bombs played. After all, the movie had the Guiness book record when it was released. Nonetheless, the game is definitely on my most wanted list at the end of the year.

After today I will be mulling over my press kits and information and thinking of what the best and worst of E3 was. That will come out on my next commentary.
