Stop Your Whining!

Ever since I came out with my own choices for Game of the Year (and yes, this was before I started my Vote for Super Mario Galaxy campaign,) I received email after email, complaint after complaint, whiner after whiner asking me why I picked Rock Band.

The answer is simple. Not only is Rock Band fun to play when part of a group, be it online or around the living room table, but it's also cool all alone on the 360/PS3. But the thing that attracts me the most is that the soundtrack is constantly evolving. The idea of having downloadable content every week means that the game has almost unlimited replay value.

You don't get that luxury in many games these days. Usually it's you play the game for a short while, usually about 10-15 hours, finish it, and it sits on your shelf to eventually become trade fodder.

Or then again, you can rent them via Gamefly and return them when done.

Not the case with Rock Band. With bringing the total number of songs available up to 114 so far (58 available initially, 43 available via downloadable content, and another 3 as an OXM bonus,) and bringing another three new songs out every week, you have tons of replay value. Not to mention the moment when full albums (The Who, Metallica, Grateful Dead, etc.) will be released.

But if anyone ever gets on the forums at the official Rock Band site, no one ever seems to be happy at all. Every week new downloadable content is released, yet there is always someone to whine about what came out.

It really came to a head this week after Harmonix released what they called the (Arguably) Punk Pack #2, which included Teenage Lobotomy by the Ramones, Complete Control by the Clash, and Truth Hits Everybody by the Police. Now aside from Teenage Lobotomy (which I first heard as a kid on the Dr. Demento show when Q94 was a decent rock station,) I will admit I never heard the other two songs, but that doesn't faze me at all.

I still download them and consider it a nice little challenge to try out a new song.
But that doesn't stop the whiners on the Rock Band forums. All of a sudden, we start with the cries of "this week's DLC sucks!" or "we want (insert band here,)" or my personal favorite "all of HMX should be fired for coming up with this crap!"

Ok, so let me get this straight. You want everyone from Harmonix to be fired just because they didn't come up with the song you wanted this week? Would you rather have it that you don't get any songs at all? If that's the case, then just go buy Rock Band on the PS2 (which does NOT offer downloadable content.)

Look fanboy, Harmonix is keeping to their word by providing new fresh content every week. How many other companies do that? Even better, would you rather have the songs you don't want FORCED upon you as part of a bundle in the same way that Guitar Hero does? You have a choice to download the pack with Rock Band or to just get the songs you want separately.

In fact, all of you who are complaining should give Harmonix credit for constantly evolving Rock Band instead of leaving it behind to work on another IPO like some other developers do. That is what I like to call commitment. So fanboys, all I can tell you is to stop your freaking whining already!

But if I was to complain about all this downloadable content, it would be just to say that my wallet has been pretty thin with all the songs I've purchased. At least I'm happy with what I get, unlike all the whiners.
