Looks like it’s that time again. Broketober is imminent, and you know what that means. It’s time for me to lose a lot of money with all the new games that are coming out. Thankfully I have other methods of being able to play them, such as Gamefly, but I’m sure I will be buying a lot of titles. In fact, I have purchased a couple of them already. That’s what I wanted to talk about this week, all of the titles that I’m either playing right now, or what I will be playing in the next few weeks. Let’s see if any of you have the same idea.
Let’s start with the games I am playing right now:
FORZA HORIZON 3 (Playground Games/Turn 10 Studios – Xbox One and Windows 10)
I’m going to get this out of the way now, I loved Horizon 2. In fact, it was on my best of 2014 list. How could Playground Games improve on such a great title? Simple, move the location to Australia, incorporate a gorgeous graphics engine designed to take advantage of High Dynamic Range (HDR) on Xbox One and up to 4K resolution and 60 fps gameplay on PC (provided you have the horsepower to run it,) incorporate co-op even in campaign mode, and allow communities to not just create race events but also bucket lists to play anytime, anywhere you want. I am actually playing through Horizon 3 right now and the experience I have had so far is nothing short of amazing. I’m hoping to get some gameplay recorded to our YouTube page just to show how good it is (provided I ever finish my Nuka World walkthrough.)
XCOM 2 (2K and Firaxis Studios – Xbox One and PS4)
Yes, I know. I already played through this game on PC. Yes, I know. I played through the three expansions (Anarchy’s Children, Alien Hunters, and Shen’s Last Gift.) And yes, I reviewed it already. But that’s not going to stop me from seeing how the game will run on consoles. I was a little disappointed with the PC version and how I couldn’t use my Xbox One controller to play it like I used the 360 controller for the previous game. I’m curious to see how this will turn out. Sure I won’t be playing the expansion packs yet but on the bright side I will have the game sent to me via Gamefly so I won’t be paying for it, yet.
Sure these two games are going to take up much of my time, but there are many more games this month that I am interested in, such as:
GEARS OF WAR 4 (The Coalition – Xbox One and Windows 10, out October 11th)
Another Xbox One title that will take advantage of HDR on the X1S, I’ve been waiting for another Gears title for a while now. This time the story centers on Marcus’ son JD after his home is attacked. The trailers for the game look amazing, and completely have my interest. Maybe it’s time that I go through the entire 360 collection again (backwards compatibility for the win!)
WWE 2K17 (2K and Yuke’s – Xbox One and PlayStation 4, out October 11th)
With the exception of NXT and the recently completed Cruiserweight Classic, WWE’s programming has been on a steady downfall lately, as this week’s 1.75 rating for Raw shows. But I’ve been a fan of the 2K series. I was disappointed last year with the loss of the “Four Horsewomen,” that being Bayley, Becky Lynch, Charlotte, and Sasha Banks, despite the game having a huge NXT influence. Thankfully they are now here, as well as an increase of NXT involvement. In fact, there is an NXT collector’s edition available for purchase which includes an eight-inch figure of Finn Balor in his “Demon” costume. Though I probably won’t get that version, I’m sure I will get the game no matter what. Go figure that and Gears 4 come out at the same day. See why I call this month “Broketober?”
BATTLEFIELD 1 (DICE and EA – Xbox One/PS4/PC, out October 21st, or October 16th via EA Access)
Yes, I get it. I hate Battlefield. That’s what you all say to me, and though I admit there I am not the biggest fan of the series, I am still curious to see how the World War 1 setting will benefit the game. I might not buy the game, but I do have EA Access, and that means that I will be able to try the game out for ten hours starting October 13th.
Maybe then I’ll make a change of heart. We’ll see.
SID MEIER’S CIVILIZATION VI (2K and Firaxis – PC, out October 21st)
I think I deviated from the rest of my GiN staff colleagues about how much I enjoyed Civ V. So needless to say I’m looking forward to what VI will bring. I admit I didn’t look into this game too much aside from some videos on Steam, but with a few small missteps (Beyond Earth not being as good as Alpha Centauri for instance,) I have a feeling Civ VI will work out great.
Don’t disappoint me, Firaxis.
ELDER SCROLLS: SKYRIM REMASTERED EDITION (Bethesda, Xbox One/PS4/PC, out October 28th)
Yeah, yeah, I know. Todd hates remasters. Why am I mentioning this one? Well I love the Elder Scrolls games. I will be playing this a lot. But the biggest reason is how I will be playing it. I’m now playing through Skyrim on PC via the Elder Scrolls Anthology released almost two years ago. By doing so I also have the three expansions, and Bethesda has promised that those who own Skyrim on PC with all the expansions are upgrading to the Remastered Edition for the low, low price…of FREE! I’m also curious to see how console sales will turn out, as both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions were to include in-game mods the same way Fallout 4 did. But we know what happened with the PlayStation version. It will be an interesting battle, that’s for sure.
I’m not even going to go through November yet as there are a lot more games than I have time to write about. Maybe this will continue then as a Part 2, but in the meantime, I’m going back to Horizon in Australia.
Happy Broketober everyone!
