Celebrating Independent Filmmakers at Blerdcon 2025

At Blerdcon 2025 this year, movies, television shows and video games took center stage. Horror movies were given a special spotlight, and the show was called Thrilla this year after the famous Michael Jackson song and video.

The celebration of movies was everywhere, especially with the amazing costume and cosplay that many people really embraced this year. There was even a special showing of Candyman to celebrate the life and times of the movie’s star, Tony Todd, who was scheduled to attend Blerdcon but sadly passed away before the event.

Some Hollywood studios even stopped by to promote upcoming movies and shows like Iyanu: Child of Wonder and the new Daredevil movie. And while blockbuster movies are great, it’s also important to support independent filmmakers too, which is just what the Cabin in the Woods Film Festival does, and why they were at Blerdcon 2025 too.

Founded by Crystal Connor, the festival is famous for showing independent films in unique places, like an actual cabin in the woods. We caught up with Crystal at Blerdcon and asked her to talk about the unique event and why it is so important to support upcoming and independent filmmakers.

The next Cabin in the Woods event takes place in August. Check it out if you want to see some of the latest and greatest independent films.
