This week for Book Series Wednesday, I’m continuing with my look at The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss with Day Two, The Wise Man’s Fear!

Plot Synopsis: Protagonist Kvothe continues the narrative commenced in The Name of the Wind, wherein a younger Kvothe continues his education in the prestigious University’s Arcanum.

Plot: Continuing pretty much right where Kvothe ends his story on the first day, with the last major event being that Kvothe finally calls the Name of the Wind and uses it to break Ambrose’s arm after Ambrose breaks Kvothe’s lute. Jackass deserved it in my opinion, although Kvothe still got whipped for it in addition to jumping up another rank in the Arcanum, this time to Re’Lar. The story gets much more engaging with what happens next, and while I won’t spoil anything Kvothe doesn’t stay at the University for the entire book. This helps his character grow and I really enjoy the different places he goes this time. In the present day we get more exchanges between Bast, his Fae student, and the Chronicler, and some very surprising things show up towards the end. I can’t wait for Day Three to be released, because I want to see how this story ends and what present day Kvothe will do after he’s done telling the story.

Characters: I really enjoy the fleshing out of all the secondary characters we met in Day One, with Simmon and Willem getting some much deserved screen time. We even learn more about Manet, Fela, Mola, Auri, and Devi. Of course Denna is still a central character and she pops up from time to time in the story, and we learn more about her mysterious benefactor who physically beats her when he is displeased. Newer characters that are introduced and fleshed out just as spectacularly as the ones we were introduced to in Day One. Of the new characters I particularly like Tempi and Vashet.

Overall: If you loved Day One of the Kingkiller Chronicle you’ll love Day Two! Plus Rothfuss still keeps his masterful use of prose, it might even be better than Day One’s prose.

For those who like: Fantasy, Masterful Prose, Amazing Characters, Excellent Plot.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above, but you are insane if you can’t enjoy them.
