Merry Christmas Everyone! I hope everyone got something they enjoy and figured most of you might receive some money that you might want to spend on something worthwhile and fun. I hope this Light Novel Thursday will help you choose a Light Novel or two to buy! (P.S. Yes that is Nami from One Piece above, and yes I know it’s a Manga image. Deal with it.)
Word about what I review: I don’t usually review the official English translations of Light Novels, mostly because there aren’t that many out there. However that is slowly changing and with the success of series like Sword Art Online and Spice and Wolf, Yen Press is the publisher of all the series I’ll talk about today.
Recommendations:
If you want a good sci-fi series mixed with excellent fantasy and an amazingly large and well done cast of characters you’ll want to pick up the first volume of A Certain Magical Index, or as I prefer to call it the Toaru series (Toaru means certain in Japanese). It’s an amazing series and while I love it, there is one big downside to reading only the official versions of it. It’s got over 33 volumes out in Japan at the moment and Yen Press can only translate one volume every 3 or 4 months.
Do you enjoy gaming and sci-fi mixed with plenty of action? If so you’ll want to check out the Sword Art Online series, the first two (maybe three) are out and they cover the first story arc of the series.
Do you enjoy an adventure that isn’t filled with the typical action and an excellent pair of lead characters? If so you’ll want to pick up the excellent Spice and Wolf series, it’s nearly finished being translated into English if I remember correctly.
Do you want a Fantasy filled with interesting characters? Try the Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatte Iru Darou ka?, or Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? in English, (I promise to have a review of this next week). It’s a great series that just got it’s first volume translated and is well worth the read. It’s quite excellent.
That’s it for this week’s Light Novel Thursday! Have a Merry Christmas, or if that isn’t your holiday this season, Happy Holidays!
