Hey all, I’m back with another LitRPG for this week’s Bookish Wednesday. It’s “Blade’s Rest Book 01” by Tom Watts.

Plot: Josh, the main character, is hired by the developer of a hit VRMMORPG called Blade and Sheath to help them create some of the newest and best content for the game, which was notoriously driven almost purely by player created content. His task? To work with two others to build a town. This a rather low stakes story, which would normally be just the thing I’d enjoy if this was handled properly.

Characters: For instance, Lincoln, one of the other main characters, is a guy who gets hired as well, but he just goes off to constantly forage in Blade and Sheath. It’s his driving goal in life, to forage off the land, and he won’t shut up about it. I wasn’t expecting to like every character, but the sheer mediocrity of the main characters makes it very hard to connect to them as a reader. Maybe that’ll change with later entries, but I’m not holding out hope for that.

Overall: If you enjoy LitRPGs and very low stakes plots, then this first entry of “Blade’s Rest” might just be for you. I just hope later entries are better reads.

For those who like: LitRPGs, Drama, and Very Low Intensity Plots.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
