Hey all, I’m back with the third volume in an urban fantasy series about the adventures of Brandon for this week’s Bookish Wednesday. It’s “Silver Magi Book Three” by D. Levesque.

Plot: I’ll be honest here with you all and admit that I could not bring myself to finish this third volume of the four-book series, mostly because it seems like all of the characters in it have suddenly caught a case of extreme idiocy.

Let me give you an example. There’s a scene fairly early on in book three that has Brandon learn a powerful spell from his elven bride that lets him unlock just about any door. Fast forward a few chapters later, and he uses it to great effect. But then just a few pages later he completely forgets that he even knows how to use it or how it works.

This happens even though from the very first time we learn about said spell, we know that it works by pushing deadbolts into an unlocked position. But, when faced with an “impenetrable door because it only has a doorknob on one side,” Brandon decides on infiltrating what is behind it using an attic. To make matters worse, he states that only he can travel into the attic despite the fact that his vampiric bride absolutely can do the same thing using her powers, something she has also demonstrated before.

It was at this point that I became completely fed up with this entire series, which was on the fence at this point anyway. But I stopped reading after that nonsense because it really was just a case of too many plot holes.

Overall: I can’t really recommend this series given that there are plenty of other similar tales out there to read and enjoy with more well-constructed plots and character interactions. “Silver Magi” started off pretty good with some interesting ideas, but it really could not hold everything together for the entire series.
