Hey all. I’m back with another truly classic film for this week’s Movie Monday. It’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Plot: This is a musical film mostly aimed at kids, but what I didn’t know before reading back up on this film was that it was based off a novel written by Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond, of all people. Add in the fact that Roald Dahl helped write the screenplay, and you might guess at why I enjoyed this movie so much as a kid. That being said, it isn’t a truly spectacular script, and it’s got some pretty obvious plot devices that anyone paying attention can see coming.
Casting: Dick Van Dyke and Sally Ann Howes are the two lead characters, Caractacus and Truly, while other pretty famous actors also appeared like Gert Frobe as the Baron. Honestly, the cast is amazing.
Cinematography: The film was pretty well shot for its time being before modern special effects and computer-generated graphics were developed.
Music: Sadly, the music of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang isn’t that great, which is a major downside in a film musical. Unlike other musicals at the time, most of the songs from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang are pretty forgettable.
Overall: A fun movie for kids, but as an adult it can grate, particularly on the ears.
For those who like: Musicals, family friendly plots, and an amazing cast.
Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
