Hey all, I’m back with another classic film for this week’s Movie Monday. It’s Gidget.
Plot: The plot of this film from 1959 revolves around the main character Gidget, played by the actress Sandra Dee, as she enters the California surfing culture. Honestly, it’s a pretty good film. And though it’s not at all that unique by today’s standards, back then it was the movie that started the genre of the beach party film. It’s also got some romance, but that is par for the course in movies like this. And there’s lots of the incredibly impressive sport of surfing to enjoy.
Cast: As I said above, Sandra Dee played the lead character and was joined by Cliff Robertson who played The Big Kahuna, but you may also know him as Uncle Ben from the Raimi Spider-Man Films. There was also James Darren playing Moondoggie. Everyone does an amazing job. Even the more minor characters in the cast do great, but the three stars are the real standouts.
Cinematography: The film doesn’t really have many special effects, but it’s well filmed and captures the sport of surfing pretty well.
Music: The music fit the surf party theme of the movie perfectly well.
Overall: A fun teen film, though not necessarily for everyone.
For those who like: Sports, Surfing, Drama, Comedy, Romance, and the Beach.
Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
