Hey all, I’m back with a DreamWorks animated movie from 1998 for this week’s Movie Monday. It’s The Prince of Egypt.
Plot: This movie is an animated adaptation of the Book of Exodus. I will note that this is one of the few films that got approval from various theological scholars. To help with the film’s accuracy, DreamWorks’ Jeffrey Katzenberg consulted with hundreds of theological and religious scholars including Christian, Jewish, and Muslim experts as well as Arab American leaders, and these experts and leaders previewed the developing movie and gave their input on the film. They praised the studio executives for seeking their input.
Casting: Oddly to me looking back at this film that’s over twenty years old, it was a surprise to remember that Val Kilmer was the voice actor for Moses. Talk about unexpected, but he did an amazing job at it. Ralph Fiennes was the voice of Rameses. He and the rest of the cast were great.
Art: This was DreamWorks’ first traditionally animated film, and the team had many former Disney artists working on it.
Music: There were musical songs as you’d expect from a movie like this, and they were all really well done.
Overall: Well worth watching as this was a non-Disney animated film that won an Academy Award.
For those who like: Biblical Stories, Musicals, Academy Award Winners, Fantastic Artwork, and Excellent Musical Scores.
Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
