Hey all, I’m back with a point and click kids game from 1994 that is extremely hard to find info on for this week’s Retro Game Friday. It’s Around the World in 80 Days.

Plot: The plot is pretty much the exact same as the Jules Verne novel, though a bit toned down since this was an edutainment game. Honestly, finding the EA Kids and Novotrade version I remembered playing so I could go over it for this column was really challenging. However, there are some modern versions with pretty similar gameplay that you can find on Steam, like Around the World in 80 Days from developer Mzonestudio. The main art screenshot for this column comes from that version.

Gameplay: It’s a point and click kids game with some very simple puzzles to solve while you get to enjoy the plot of the novel. I remember spending more than a few days in the school library when it was raining just enjoying the game since I was bored and had read all the books that weren’t way below my reading level by that point.

Art: The art’s aged pretty well, though it’s got issues in some areas. Mostly it’s just some standard stuff from the time period for edutainment games. The aforementioned more modern version is much better, of course.

Music: It fit the story.

Overall: If you can find a copy of this, you probably won’t be able to play since it came on a floppy disk. But congratulations on finding a rather elusive edutainment game from that era if you do.

For those who like: Edutainment games and the original novel.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
