This week for Shoujo Saturday I’m covering a series that again isn’t technically a series aimed at young women, but the subject matter makes me feel like making another exception. It’s Otoyomegatari, or Young Bride’s Stories in English, by Kaoru Mori!

Plot Synopsis: Set in Turkic Central Asia in a rural town near the Caspian Sea during the late 19th century, the story revolves around a young woman, Amira, who arrives from a distant village across the mountains to marry Karluk, a boy eight years her junior. The story unfolds among details of every-day family and community life. However, the peaceful atmosphere is disturbed when Amira’s family demands to take her back to their village.

Plot: I was quite surprised to read a series about life in what we now call Iran. I frankly find the insight into people’s daily lives and the culture fascinating, and there is absolutely no mention of religion.

Characters: Amira is quite a woman, being quite capable of killing almost any wild animal with a bow from horseback, and Karluk isn’t half bad despite being twelve. I really enjoy Karluk’s family and particularly their guest Mr. Smith, a traveler from Britain. Everyone in this series is well developed and it just gives you a great look into their culture.

Artwork: The art is technically Seinen, but it’s got hints of Josei and Shoujo particularly in the eyes. That being said the artwork is great, and I honestly had to look up the plot synopsis again to make sure I was reading about people in Iran.

Overall: This is a great story, particularly if you like female leads who can kick ass while being very feminine.

For those who like: Historical Fiction, Love Stories, Great Cast of Characters, Amazing Artwork.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above, but how can you hate that.
