Free League publishing is quickly becoming known as a rising star in the pen and paper role-playing arena. Their games are widely known solidly constructed and provide an alternative choice to some of the more established brands out there such as those published by Wizards and Pathfinder. Free League is also happy to expand into new areas with games and entire systems that have never been seen before.
The Blade Runner RPG is a perfect example of this new trend. It was funded using Kickstarter, and has now been released for everyone to play. Blade Runner The Roleplaying Game offers players the ability to enter the beautiful and flawed world that was first revealed in the original novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Phillip K. Dick. Our first glimpse of this incredible world was in the 1982 film Blade Runner staring Harrison Ford, and once more in the Blade Runner 2049 movie which was released in 2017. It’s also been the subject of three official video games and influenced countless others over the years. And Annapurna Interactive, the team behind the amazing Stray video game, is said to be working on a brand new Bladerunner game, although no release date has yet been announced.
But for all the ways players could experience or see Blade Runner, until now, there were no good options for role-players to become a part of this fascinating world.
Designed by Tomas Harenstam, Blade Runner The Roleplaying Game was released to critical acclaim. It’s been nominated for two ENNIE Awards and already won Best RPG at the Origins Awards and the People’s Choice award at the UK Games Expo. But far from resting on that success, the team at Free League is already expanding their game world with upcoming new modules entitled Fiery Angels and Replicant Rebellion.
Firey Angels
The Firey Angle module follows the same deluxe format and packaging as the award-winning Case File 01: Electric Dreams, which was included in the Blade Runner RPG Starter Set. The Fiery Angels module is a boxed set featuring a new thrilling investigative scenario and a host of in-world handouts, photos, maps and more.
Players will be able to experience the Blade Runner world even more deeply. Yes, the atmosphere in the new module is incredible, so expect game masters to be able to offer their players the ability to experience things like nighttime noodle shops in the rain as bright lights from passing vehicles pierce the darkness of the imposing gothic architecture looming all around. And clever game masters will be able to use Firey Angels to add even more content to their game worlds. For example, creating some amazing gambling halls or pachinko palaces from the Blade Runner movies for their world could add some great flavor to the experience, just like some of those fun places in real life covered by Wiser Gambler’s Canada casino reviews. The sky is the limit, and beyond, with the new module.
The actual investigation in Firey Angels starts off with the Blade Runners assigned to question a suspect arrested while trying to infiltrate the Wallace Corporation Memory Vaults. The case leads the team down a perilous path that explores the boundaries of Replicant technology and its consequences. The player characters need to contend with an array of physical, mental, and moral challenges.
Though Fiery Angels is a stand-alone adventure, users who have played Case File 01: Electric Dreams will experience a continuation of story elements from that narrative. This new boxed Case File module will include:
- A beautifully illustrated and detailed scenario book with locations, characters, events, and leads to follow.
- A manila envelope containing around 20 handouts, including a variety of in-world artifacts and Esper photos.
- Half a dozen full-color, double-sided maps.
- Price point: $34.99.
Replicant Rebellion
The new Replicant Rebellion module will expand the scope of the core game even more, allowing players to join the ranks of the Replicant underground in the Los Angeles of 2037. The characters are an independent cell loosely organized under Freysa Sadeghpour’s leadership, and undertake a variety of operations – from helping fugitive Nexus-8 Replicants elude capture to sabotaging installations of the Replicant industry. This beautifully illustrated hardback sourcebook will include:
- An overview of the history and organization of the Replicant underground, charting its presence throughout the Blade Runner timeline.
- Detailed guidelines on how to play a Replicant underground campaign, including several new player character archetypes.
- Half a dozen complete Operations (i.e., complete adventures) to play for a cell in the Replicant underground.
- Price point: $49.99.
- Release: 2024.
