Competitive Play is a ranked, competitive mode available within Overwatch. In this mode, player will be able to achieve a higher rank, separate from his/her profile level. The game will later use this rank to match the player against other players with similar skill to create fun and tough matches between friends.
How Does It Work?
To be eligible for this mode, the player must reach level 25 first. Once done, the player can then join the mode and struggle to complete the 10 Placement Matches. These matches will pit the player against other players with different skill levels. After completing these 10 matches, the player will be assigned an initial rank. Everything is based on the player’s performance.
Once the player completed the 10 Placement Matches, the queuing process will begin as usual. Before every battle, the player will be able to see his/her skill rating. This will give enough information to the player about the current skill rank the opponent might have.
Game types
Both Competitive Play and Casual Play are using the same game types. All with a small twist. In this mode, player will deal with some game types.
Payload Matches
There are 2 rounds in this game type. In each round, both team will be given a turn to escort the payload. The winner of this game type will be the team who succeeded to escort their payload to the furthest point.
Control Points
In this game type, there are 5 rounds. In order to win, player must collect at least 3 winnings from total 5 rounds. If anything else happens, it will be a loss.
A Draw
What happen if both team reaches a draw? Well, it means both will be forced into a Sudden Death Overtime. It’s time to gamble with time and find out who is the best player in the shortest time.
Rewards
When a player joined the Competitive Play, he might be eligible for some rewards. Of course, all depends on the player’s performance.
Placement Match
Once a player completed his/her 10 Placement Matches, the player will be awarded with a logo and static spray.
Season Animated Spray
If the player successfully reached Top 500 players for that Season, a special and animated Spray will be unlocked. This kind of Spray can be only obtained that Season.
Golden Guns
For joining the Season Mode, the player may acquire some special points, called “Competitive Points.” Player can use these points to purchase special items, such as Golden Gun skin for weapon.
Duration
Competitive Play follows the same schedule Overwatch has set for the real world seasons. Therefore, every single year, player can join the 4 seasons. However, there might be an exception for the Season 1. This season was launched a week ago, at June 28th, 2016. The first season will be shorter. Perhaps. It has something to do with the Summer.
