For the last few years, zombies have anchored what’s left of their grotesque and decaying feet right in the top spot for entertainment’s go-to villain. The popularity of shows like The Walking Dead and now Fear the Walking Dead brought a slew of new fans to the horror genre, and games like Dead Island, (soon to be followed by Dead Island 2) and The Last of Us turned those fans into full-fledge zombiephiles.
But there’s another terrifying undead creature that’s been underutilized during the last few years of zombie-mania. It’s the undervalued mummy.
Mummies had their time in the sun for a short while with Stephen Sommers’ 1999 remake of Universal’s classic The Mummy from 1932. The remake inspired two sequels, The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, as well as the spin-off series, The Scorpion King—only one of which didn’t go directly to video. Then there was the abysmal shared universe project… But since the last film aired in Sommers’ series, the only high-profile mummy project was a rumored fourth installment to his franchise. The Mummy 3 actress Maria Bello said the fourth film would “absolutely” happen nearly five (!) years ago, but much to a mummy’s dismay, there hasn’t been any further movement on the movie. And when there’s no mummy movies, there’s no mummy games for them to inspire.
Today if you want to play a mummy game, your only options are old-school games written for the movies. Otherwise, you’ll have to play games where the mummies are just secondary characters, like in Diablo 2 or the God of War series. If you’re really a big mummy fan, there’s an online game where you can potentially win actual money off the villain. The scratch off-based game features the characters from the original film and The Scorpion King, and sure enough it includes the decrepit mummy himself. If you match the right symbols you even get to see an animated version of the character move across the screen.
The games we have are fine, sure, but mummies are too good of villains (and creepy to boot) to be continuously outdone by their undead counterparts. There could be a little hope on the horizon, as there are reports of a new film coming out in 2017. There’s no telling how it will be received, but if it does well, it’s possible we could see zombies dethroned in the next few years.
They’re both undead, and they’re both scary. but let’s give the zombies a break and let the mummies take over for a bit.
