The three most popular genres right now for indie games are survival, roguelites and metroidvanias. But sometimes, developers find a mysterious way to mix all three genres and come up with something brilliant. In this week’s Save State column, Vincent Mahoney plays with a perfect example of that in Rogue Legacy 2.
This week, Save State features the action RPG franchise known as Ys series by Nihon Falcom. Vincent Mahoney takes a close look at a title in the series from 2006 called Ys Origin. It’s a prequel to the previous nine titles, all with action, puzzles, platforming elements and movement that is both agile and responsive.
We covered the fun but flawed Pokémon Scarlet and Violet when initially released, but there is more than one fan of the series among the GiN reviewer crew. So, while Neal Sayatovich agrees with his colleague Vincent Mahoney, he still wants to offer his own take focusing on Pokémon Violet.
The Pinball Wizard video game takes its name seriously, offering players a rogue-like dungeon crawler that is centered around levels of tricky pinball-like fun. A pinball dungeon crawler may sound like an odd combination, but it’s actually really fun.
Game Review- The Long Dark: Tales from the Far Territory DLC
Hinterland Studio has split their frosty Long Dark game into two parts, the story focused Wintermute missions and the open world survival portion of the game. Tales from the Far Territory is the first DLC for the survival section, and it’s a big one.
Hindsight could almost rightly be considered more art than game, but for those looking for a unique adventure that shows how video games can address serious issues while also offering players some entertainment at the same time, Hindsight is more than worth the experience.
