Hey all I’m back with a game that harkens back to some of the truly older classics. It’s Caveman Warriors!
Gameplay: The gameplay plays a lot like the sidescrolling Mario which isn’t a surprise since it says it was inspired by that series, plus Joe & Mac, Metal Slug and Trine. The gameplay has the classic lives, which if you run out give you a game over. The departure from a game like Mario is the addition of a health bar, and yes, I know getting a mushroom or Fireflower gave you a couple of additional hits, but it’s not quite the same.
Frankly it was very nostalgic to play, and while there were some of its gimmicks, like throwing a spear to use as a foothold while climbing a wall, it still had callbacks to classics like jumping onto enemies to beat them. Also nostalgic, and not in a good way, was the frustration that occurred when you died repeatedly after beating a tough encounter and then were killed right before getting to the next checkpoint.

It might have been a bit less frustrating if I had a friend playing alongside me using the local multiplayer option that came with the game, but I still would’ve felt frustrated.
There are four different characters to play as and you can switch between them all easily with a press of a button. They each play a little differently, but it’s essentially the same.
Art: The art is also a throwback to the old classics like Mario, but with more updated animations. The game is also purely in 3D which is good, because it’ll stand the test of time, at least in terms of the artwork.
Music: Mediocre, not really memorable or noteworthy at all.
Overall: This is a fun game if you can get a friend or family member to play with you, but alone it will have all the frustrations of the classic side-scrolling platformer.
For those who like: Side-scrollers, Platformers, 2D Artwork, Classic Platformer Gameplay.
Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
