Hey there again, Time Wasters!
This week I’ve decided to take a more relaxing approach to my time wasting hours and searched for something that would keep my interest without making me stress out about it (normal work does that well enough).
So this week I bring to you the simple game called 100% Complete, whose goal is simply to find the level’s door. With that task in mind, I set out expecting to find the sacred fixture after traversing through perilous platforms and pits among other such obstacles. Imagine my surprise when I walked to the other end of the room, found the door, entered, and was given a ‘YOU WIN’ screen.
"How odd," I thought. But then I noticed that my game completion was at 0% and I was given the option to continue playing. Well, beating a game at 0% doesn’t do anything for my gamer ego. So as you can probably guess, I pressed continue and was put back into the room where I had first started. It took only seconds to find out what exactly I was looking for: several secret items scattered through secret rooms throughout multiple secret passages. Yes, this game has everything to do with finding secrets.
And that’s really all there is to it. I did say I was looking for a simple game, didn’t I? But don’t dismay, the game isn’t boring. In fact, it manages to make you keep searching in order to achieve that 100% by giving you a couple of items to help speed you along (just so you don’t get, as I said, bored). Through your search you’ll stumble upon green glasses that will let you see where some secret passages lie, and you’ll also find a propeller beanie hat that lets you fly all around levels and get to hard to reach places.
Actually, the beanie hat is a bit unbalanced for the game, or at least in places. Some items look like they can be obtained by jumping to them via block platforms, but the hat makes the need to jump pointless as you can just fly right up and collect the secret. It would have been better to have those rooms accessible before obtaining the beanie hat rather than after. Perhaps even gaining the hat after having collected a series of lesser power-ups would have made it balance better.
The controls too are a little bit frustrating at times when you have to try time and time again to hit the one block you’re trying to move while flying, but it’s nothing you can’t get the hang off. Both the controls and the over powered beanie hat of awesomeness are only small design flaws though, and neither changes the addictiveness or fun of the game (since your desire to get 100% of items and flying around maps keeps that going on its own).
Simple yet fun, and also taking a good bit of my time wasting time, I’d say give it a shot if you have some time to kill. It’s not a big attention grabber, so consider this one more for you calm casual gamers.
